What’s the Big Deal About Lead Based Paint?

If your home was built prior to 1978, it may have paint which contains lead. This is called lead-based paint. It can be dangerous if not properly managed. According to the EPA:

  • Lead exposure can harm children and babies even before they are born.
  • Even children who seem healthy can have high levels of lead in their bodies
  • People can get lead in their bodies by breathing or swallowing lead dust, or by eating soil or paint chips containing lead
  • People have many options for reducing lead hazards. In most cases, lead-based paint that is in good condition is not a hazard.
  • Removing lead-based paint improperly can increase the danger to your family

When you list your home for sale, part of your paper work is called the Lead-Based Paint Addendum You’ll be asked to disclose any knowledge of lead-based paint in your home. Also, be aware, that the buyer has the right to have the home inspected for the presence of lead-based paint.
